Any fighting game with a roster as eclectic and varied as MultiVersus will have players frantically weighing up each fighter’s pros and cons to narrow down the best characters to play as.

Warner Bros’ wacky brawler is finally upon us, having fully released on 29th May 2024 after its open beta came to an end in April 2023.

The free-to-play game pits various characters owned by the entertainment giant against each other, including the likes of Batman, Arya Stark and Gizmo from the film Gremlins.

At launch, there are a whopping 26 different characters and various levels inspired by them, such as the moody Bat Cave.

Although the game is free, players will still have to pay with real-world money or earn in-game currency over time to unlock the full line-up, as only five characters are available to use at the start.

And it is an odd mix of characters to begin with, too, as Bugs Bunny, LeBron James, Finn from Adventure Time, Shaggy and Wonder Woman are who we will be mastering the game’s ropes with at launch.

However, we’ve spent some time with the game both after its full release and during the open beta to help determine which MultiVersus characters are the best, so read on for our analysis and details of the full roster.

MultiVersus character classes

MultiVersus has launched with four different character classes that all bring different pros and cons to the game. Below is a list of the various classes, plus each character in that category:

  • Assassin: Marvin the Martian, Stripe, Arya Stark, Finn, Harley Quinn
  • Bruiser: Banana Guard, Black Adam, Morty, LeBron James, Taz, Batman, Garnet, Jake, Shaggy
  • Mage/Ranged: The Joker, Gizmo, Rick, Velma, Bugs Bunny, Reindog, Tom and Jerry
  • Tank: Jason Voorhees, The Iron Giant, Steven Universe, Superman, Wonder Woman

MultiVersus best character

In brawler games like MultiVersus, the best characters are always a matter of opinion. The roster is designed to be varied so it appeals to all types of playstyle.

If you prefer going into battles like a wrecking ball, then The Iron Giant (Tank) is a safe bet. If you’d rather sit back and pick your foes off from a distance, then a ranged fighter such as Bugs Bunny might work better.

Previous debates in the RadioTimes.com office when the game was in the open beta period rendered Taz as one of the best options to play as. However, he was eventually impacted by a patch that put a cooldown timer on his powerful spin attack.

Batman and Harley Quinn also received favour among our writers. Having played the game now it has fully launched (albeit with a limited roster at the moment), we’d argue Wonder Woman or Shaggy are two of the best options.

Both are powerful brawlers with a simple fighting style that mostly involves bashing your opponent until you win, but they are both a safe way to introduce yourself to the more complicated side of the game.

MultiVersus tier list

Making a tier list is very subjective (and very much tied to your individual playstyle), but this is how we'd rank the MultiVersus characters that we've had the chance to play with thus far:

  • S Tier: Taz, Batman, Superman, Harley Quinn, Shaggy, Wonder Woman
  • A Tier: The Iron Giant, Arya Stark, Finn, Bugs Bunny
  • B Tier: Garnet, Jake the Dog, LeBron James, Finn
  • C Tier: Velma, Reindog, Steven Universe, Tom and Jerry

We'll try our best to update this article as more MultiVersus characters are added, and it's worth noting that future patches could well alter which ones play best. You can never get too comfortable with a game like this!
